Experimentia - an Inter-Arts project

Director/Choreographer : Amanda Phillips
Composer : Alexander Mitchell
Software Designer : Damian West
Performers : Gala Moody & Lisa Griffiths
Live Technology Performance : Alex Mitchell & Damian West
Filming : Alex, Damian & Amanda

The creative team of Experimentia has been researching 3D film/video in a performative context with the support of SAPAC through filming, the creative application of custom-made computer programs, dance and music composition. SAPAC supplied the stereo still and video camera gear, as well as advising on imaging and display issues in general.

Experimentia is a live technology performance in 3D exploring the dynamic feedback between movement, sound and image between virtual bodies and spaces and the reality of the audience. Each screened performance is a unique combination of audiovisuals.

Experimentia has been filmed in several locations around Adelaide and further development of this work will take place over 2007 in Taiwan through residencies at the Taipei Artist Village and in Shanghai at the Shanghai International Performing Arts Research Centre.

The continuing support of SAPAC is vital to the research that this team of artists is conducting and is an exciting example of a South Australian business-arts partnership. The partnership was instigated by Alexander Mitchell who is currently studying a Master of Arts in Composition, at the Elder Conservatorium.

Experimentia is available for projection within galleries, on buildings and in-house screenings at festivals, events and conferences.

The artists are available to talk about their work and look forward to developing their work under the SAPAC banner.

Technical note: initial work (September 2007) has been undertaken using a pair of Canon XH-G1 high-definition video cameras to prepare Antics, a short test piece for the use of these HD cameras.
Elements from this work were premiered at OzViz 2007. This presentation covered various aspects of the process, from choreography and concept, musical composition, filming, to use of Quartz Composer for processing and real-time manipulation of the video via Wii.
During filming, the cameras were synched via their onboard genlock. It appears that this was adequate in this context. There is much room for exploration with these cameras- varying the shutter speed, for example...
