SAPAC/eResearch SA Summer Vacation Scholarships, 2007-2008

The South Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing (SAPAC, soon to become eResearch SA) is offering up to four Summer Vacation Scholarships available for up to 10 weeks in the period December 2007 to February 2008, with a tax-free stipend of $250 per week.

Participants will work on a project that contributes to some aspect of the SAPAC activities in advanced high-performance computing, grid computing, digital repositories, visualization and e-Research, as applied to any discipline, and will be supervised by SAPAC staff. Examples include:

  • Benchmarking and performance tuning of parallel programs
  • Developing or customising parallel or grid computing applications, and/or web-based portals for such applications, for SAPAC users
  • Implementing distributed applications using web services, in areas such as physics, bioinformatics, biodiversity informatics and GIS
  • Improved programming environments and libraries for parallel computing
  • Digital repositories for storage and management of large data sets
  • Aspects of visualisation, including distributed visualisation
  • Haptics and haptic applications

Suggestions for other projects related to the activities of SAPAC are welcomed.

SAPAC encourages applications from students in all disciplines. One studentship is targeted at a suitable project in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences or Finance.

Applicants should be students from one of the public South Australian universities, who are currently enrolled in at least their second year of study, and have a strong academic record. Students awarded a scholarship will be expected to produce a short written report at the end of the internship.

Email a completed application form, a CV that includes details of your grades and computing and programming expertise and the names of one or two referees to SAPAC by November 7th, 2007.
